i stood on the rock that covered my den, the cool raining falling on my orange pelt. the cold water soaked through my coat, sending chills down my spine. my amber gaze shifted among the trees, hoping to see movement or catch the scent of a wandering dog who needed a home. my pack was welcoming new members, and i was hoping to recruit some today. nearly slipping off the rock by the movement of a paw, i regained my balance. i looked up to the sky, sighed, and howled like not any other dog would howl. it was more of a singing-sound, and i couldn't care less if the packs near me heard my cry. let them be intimidated. let them see that i am a real threat. as my howl came to a close, i dropped my head, scanning the tree line once more. i clenched my jaw, my teeth rubbing together. hopefully someone would come join me.
My paws beat the ground in a constant, sweeping rhythm as I ran through the forest. Branches and plants whipped my face as I glided by, but I didn't mind. It was my daily run, and I was really pushing my speed. Almost sprinting. The earth met my paws again and again as I bounded through the dense foliage, the air and the rain in my face coaxing me forward. But in a few moments, I heard something that stopped me in my tracks.
The soft sound of a howl met my ears. It was packed with emotion, and it really barreled into me. I shook off the remnants of fatigue, and after a few moments of deep panting, I set off in the howl's direction, curiosity plaguing my mind. I had seen packs before, and yearned to join one. To know what it was like to have a family.
Soon I had reached its source. There were little to no border markings; the rain had probably washed them away. Crossing through a tree-line, I caught sight of another dog. Orange, like me, but a different breed. I called out a bark of greeting, lowering my tail to a relaxed position.
I heard your howl, I began, pausing before inquiring, Is there a pack here?

a rust-colored figure emerged from the treeline. my amber gaze followed the mysterious creature as he began to approach me. he was taller than i, and a lot larger by all means. being a toller, i was considered one of the smaller breeds of the retriever family. my luscious orange fur was becoming drenched by the current downpour, where the water chilled me to the bone. i smiled cautiously, eyeing the unfamiliar dog. he barked a greeting, and i nodded as to say hello. his tail was down and relaxed- a sign of submission and friendliness. i gracefully leaped down from the rock i was standing on, landing in a puddle of mud. my white and orange paws were dappled with brown from all of the dirt and mud i have trampled through.
i stood in front of the unknown male and nodded, my ears erect, showing my authority. "yes there is, thank you for coming to inquire. i am soldier, commander of the fifth brigade. and you are...?" my gaze softened as i spoke to the male. he didn't seem very strong, but his long legs showed his endurance. he was probably very quick. "i am currently recruiting members to join my brigade. are you looking to join?" i cocked my head to one side, eager to hear his response. my tail wagged slightly, my heart thumping loudly.
I closed my amber eyes with pleasure as raindrops continued to sink into my fur, opening them again as the female came forward to greet me. As she took a position of authority, showing she was in charge, and as a flurry of cautious emotions that weren't mine ricocheted into my chest, I further showed respect by averting my gaze. I was a bit confused. She knew I'd feel that, so why would she let it be felt? I tried to ignore her nervousness as I replied.
I'm 302. Nice to meet you, Soldier, I said, introducing myself. When she had finished speaking, I noticed the feeling escalate, and could no longer bear to keep silent about it. There is no need to be nervous. I would greatly appreciate it if you could find a place for me in your ranks.

the dog stood in front of me, noticing my nervousness. well, it wasn't quite nervousness i would say, it was more excitement which lead to nervousness. the dog spoke his name, but it was just three numbers. numbers aren't much of a name. i looked at him in confusion, wanting an explanation. i wasn't judging, i was more confused than anything. "302, is it? may i ask how you got that name?" i sat my behind in front of him, the rain running off my maw with each drop. i silently cursed the weather without it showing on my face, but i hated the rain because it ruined my beautiful coat.
"so you say you want to join? there's a lot of commitment with that. once you join my pack, you are in it until your last breath. you are expected to protect the brigade until your last breath has been breathed." i sat a little straighter, improving my posture. i puffed my white chest out a bit, hoping that the commitment wouldn't intimidate him, and i sighed. "if you are willing to make that commitment, what are you capable of bringing to the pack? what's your forte? what are you good at?" i sat patiently, waiting for a response.
I smiled a bit, having seen that question coming. It always came after an introduction. Well, I began, Idon't really know, myself. Ever since I was a puppy I have had this chain and tag. I had another dog read it to me once, and apparently all it says is 302. So I took that as my name.
As Soldier spoke of the commitment and loyalty joining would require, I couldn't help but let my tail wag a bit. That's what I wanted. That's the type of pack I wanted to join. I met her gaze and said seriously, I would gladly lay my life down for my family. If by joining the pack I join the family, then I'll happily stay until my last breath has been breathed. As for what I can contribute... I love to hunt, and run. I run every morning to maximize my stamina and speed, and I've been doing so for about a year now. If you can use me as a leader somewhere, I'll oblige. I'm not meaning to challenge you, of course, but I'm capable of directing a group. I can also fight if needed, but only if it's really necessary.
